A mysterious illness, termed "Disease X," has claimed at least 31 lives, predominantly children under five, in the remote Panzi region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Over 406 cases have been reported in Kwango Province since October, with the death toll possibly as high as 143, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The illness presents symptoms similar to respiratory infections, including fever, coughing, and body aches. Acute pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19, measles, and malaria are being investigated as potential causes, with malnutrition likely worsening the outbreak. WHO teams are on-site collecting samples and coordinating responses, but efforts are hindered by the area's remoteness, lack of labs, and ongoing seasonal malaria surge.
While global risk remains low, experts warn of cross-border transmission into Angola. WHO urges vigilance as the source of Disease X is probed, underscoring the urgent need for health resources in vulnerable regions.
