A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off Northern California’s coast near Petrolia, Humboldt County, on December 5, 2024, at 10:44 a.m. PST. Triggering brief tsunami warnings from Davenport, CA, to the Oregon coast, the alert was lifted by noon with no tsunami threats reported.


The quake sparked over 30 aftershocks, including a 4.3 magnitude tremor, shaking communities and prompting evacuations, such as in Berkeley’s West District. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as assessments continue. Minor damages were reported in Humboldt County, with cracked roads, roof damage, and a gas leak resolved in Rio Dell. Remarkably, no injuries have been reported.


The USGS’s early warning system sent alerts to over 500,000 people, highlighting its efficiency. President Biden assured readiness to provide federal assistance if needed. Californians are urged to remain vigilant as aftershocks continue, with a 34% chance of another magnitude 5 quake within the week.
