Spirit Airlines Files for Bankruptcy, Vows to Keep Flying

Spirit Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, citing years of financial losses and a failed merger with JetBlue. The low-cost carrier announced it has reached an agreement with bondholders to restructure its debts, assuring customers that flights, tickets, credits, and loyalty points will remain unaffected during the process.

"The most important thing to know is that you can continue to book and fly now and in the future," Spirit stated in an open letter. The airline, which hasn’t posted an annual profit since 2019, became the first major U.S. carrier to file for bankruptcy since 2011. The move follows a federal judge blocking JetBlue’s proposed acquisition of Spirit in January, citing consumer harm. Spirit aims to complete restructuring by early 2025.
