In Senegal, a pioneering initiative known as the “School for Husbands” is transforming traditional gender roles and improving maternal health outcomes. Launched in 2011 and supported by the United Nations, this program trains respected male community leaders such as imams and former soldiers in “positive masculinity” and the importance of supporting women’s health and rights.
Operating over 20 schools across Senegal, the program has trained more than 300 men who now serve as peer educators. These men advocate for gender equality, safe childbirth, and family planning within their communities. Their efforts have led to increased hospital births, reduced forced marriages, and greater acceptance of women’s rights.
Despite progress, challenges remain, with maternal mortality rates still high. Program leaders emphasize that presenting gender equality through the lens of health helps overcome local resistance and cultural misconceptions.
How can community-led initiatives like Senegal’s “School for Husbands” inspire change in your community?
