South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been detained following his impeachment and a protracted standoff with law enforcement On January 15. This marks the first time a sitting South Korean president has been arrested.
The arrest occurred after Yoon's December 3 declaration of martial law, which he justified as a necessary measure against an "anti-state" opposition. This action led to his impeachment on charges of insurrection and abuse of power.
Authorities executed the arrest at Yoon's fortified presidential compound in Seoul, overcoming resistance from his security personnel and supporters. Yoon eventually surrendered to prevent potential violence, stating, "I am complying to avoid bloodshed."
Following his detention, Yoon was taken to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) for questioning. He is expected to be held in a solitary cell at the Seoul Detention Centre during the investigation.
